Complete Vitae

A native of western North Carolina, Deborah Wyatt Funderburk has taught for over 35 years at the university level and is an Instructor teaching at Mississippi State University for 30 years. She received a BFA in Theatre Dance from the East Carolina University School of Theatre and Dance in 1977 and a M.S. degree in Secondary Education from Mississippi State University in 1999. She also studied dance at the North Carolina School of the Arts and graduate study in dance history at the University of Nebraska.

Deborah has choreographed over 100 musicals, operas, dance concerts and musical theatre productions, and is the founder and faculty advisor of Terpsichore, the Mississippi State University Dance Theatre company. She teaches History and Appreciation of Dance, Teaching Rhythms, and courses in Modern Dance, Contemporary Dance, and Ballet in the MSU Department of Kinesiology. She was awarded the Mississippi Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD) 1999 Pride of Teaching Award, has served as Vice-President of Dance of MAHPERD, and received the Phi Mu "Favorite Professor" Award in 2004 as well as the Alpha Delta/Lambda Sigma Teaching Award in 1998. Deborah has been a regular member of the MSU Performing Arts Committee (Lyceum), the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Dance Association, and a founding member serving on the Starkville Area Arts Council's Board of Directors.

Deborah's research mission involves the use of dance integration into education at all levels. She has worked with the National Endowment for the Arts, Mississippi Arts Commission and other agencies to realize this goal. She is married to Brent Funderburk, a William L. Giles Distinguished Professor of Art at MSU, and has two sons who are Mississippi State University alumni.
